Certified To HELP Counselors combine training, clinical time n the battle against drug and alcohol addiction, counselors are on the front lines, working with clients and their families to help them nd recovery. Addiction counselors who practice in the state of Maryland are certi ed and licensed by the Board of Professional Counselors and erapists, an agency of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.In 2015, state legislation passed which changed the education and supervision

requirements for certi cation and licensure to practice clinical alcohol and drug counseling. ese changes became e‚ective on Oct. 1, 2015.Maryland has four levels of certi cation for Substance Abuse Counseling. e rst tier is known as Certi ed Supervised Counselor Alcohol and Drug (CSC-AD), the second level is known as Certi ed Associate Counselor Alcohol and Drug (CAC-AD), the third level is known as Licensed Graduate Alcohol and Drug

Counselor (LGADC), and the fourth level is known as Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). Maryland also has a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) classi cation.

LCPCs are licensed for behavioral health and addiction counseling.
